Registering to Vote in Gwinnett County

The 2000 Presidential elections taught Americans that every vote counts. As the country gears up for another election, now is the time to register to vote. We've assembled some questions and answers about what you need to know to register. If you need more information, or have any questions about how to register to vote, please use our contact form.

What are the qualifications needed to register?

In order to register to vote in Gwinnett County, you must be a United States citizen, be at least eighteen years of age, and live in Gwinnett County. In addition, you cannot register if you are serving a sentence for commission of a felony, or have been judged mentally incompetent.

What if I'm already registered, but I have moved since the last election?

If you moved within the county, you can fill out a change of address form at least 30 days prior to the election in which you will vote. If you have moved into the county, you must register with the county you live in.

Do I have to register for a political party?

In Georgia, voter registration is non-partisan, and you don't specify a party when you register. On election day, you can choose the party's ballot that you want to vote.

How long before an election do I have to register?

You must be registered 30 days prior to a primary or general election to vote in that election. In the case of a runoff, only those people registered for the election that forced the runoff may vote.

Here are the voting and registration dates for the 2008 elections:

  • February 5th, 2008 Presidential Preference Primary/Special Election
    Registration Cutoff: January 7th, 2008
  • July 15, 2008 Primary and Special Election

How can I register to vote?

There are several ways to register. You can go to any county library and register in person. You may also register at the Gwinnett Elections office at 455 Grayson Highway in Lawrenceville. You can also fill out the voter registration form online, print it out, and mail it to the Georgia Secretary of State, along with a photocopy of your driver's license, a utility bill, bank statement, or government document that shows your name and address. In order to complete the form, you will need to install the Adobe Reader, which is available here.
